[7/25/16 update: The updated tables for universities awarding PhD's in Statistics and Biostatistics from 2003-2014 can be found here:
10/2/15 update: See the report of the 2014 data release in this Amstat News article and the accompanying blog entry. The reports include breakouts for biostatistics degrees, proportion of degrees awarded to women, links to tables, and lists of universities granting undergraduate and graduate degrees in statistics and biostatistics for 2003-2014. No changes were made to the blog entry below.]
3/24/15: For a more general perspective, see the Annual Survey of the Mathematical Sciences and the American Mathematical Society website.]
Last week I posted blog entries listing the largest U.S. graduate programs in statistics and biostatistics for the three most recent academic years for which data is available from NCES IPEDS: 2009-2010, 2010-2011, & 2011-2012. See for example, Largest U.S. Doctorate Programs in Statistics and Biostatistics. In that blog, I reported that 67 universities granted PhD's statistics in the last three years; 31 for biostatistics.
In this blog entry, I look at the PhD numbers by year going back to the 2002-2003 academic year. In Figure 1, one sees a general upward trend - at least initially - in the number of universities granting statistics and biostatistics PhD's each year, paralleling the growth in PhD's granted for statistic and biostatistics for the same period (Figure 2).

Figure 2: Number of PhD's in statistics and biostatistics granted in the U.S. 2003-2013.
Last week's blog entry also showed the top PhD granting institutions over the last three years (2010-2012) for both statistics and biostatistics. Here's a look at the top 10 PhD granters for 2003-2006, 2007-2009, and, again, 2010-2012:
