Abstract: Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is a multidisciplinary process that uses explicit methods to determine the value of health technology at different points in its lifecycle. The purpose is to inform decision-making to promote an equitable, efficient, and high-quality health system (Rourke, 2020). Though complex and demanding, HTA serves as a critical step following routine benefit-risk evaluations by drug regulatory agencies like the FDA or EMA. Its primary objective is to ensure access to innovative yet cost-effective medications for patients through well-informed decision-making and optimal resource allocation. HTA draws upon disciplines such as epidemiology, evidence synthesis, and health economics to assess the value of new health technologies. These assessments typically employ quantitative methods such as comparative clinical evaluations, cost-effectiveness analysis, budget impact analysis, and occasionally multi-criteria decision analysis. Statisticians within HTA play a diverse role, employing methods like pairwise meta-analysis, network meta-analysis, propensity score matching, and regression-based approaches. They also contribute significantly to areas such as real-world evidence, structural expert elicitation, and modeling of natural disease history, making indispensable contributions across various HTA markets. India is currently going through the initial stages of developing a robust HTA infrastructure and policy framework. Through this webinar, the presenters aim to create awareness about HTA, its current opportunities, possible areas for research in the Indian context, and most importantly, how statisticians can play a significant role in helping patients access life-saving and innovative medicines or drugs.

    Speaker Bios:

Dr. Jani Mueller currently holds a faculty position with the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where she teaches health technology assessment. She is a researcher interested in health systems, health policy, and HTA for medical technology. Jani remains dedicated to promoting, collaborating, and raising awareness of sustainable HTA development and implementation. She is a co-founder of the Southern African HTA Society (SAHTAS) and has served on the INAHTA Board as a director. Jani chairs the Scientific Development and Capacity Building Committee (SDCB) in her capacity as a member of the HTAi board of directors. She leads the interest group of HTAi on HTA in developing countries, is an Associate Editor of IJTAHC, and is a member of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) South Africa Chapter.

Dr. Antonio Remiro-Azocar is a Lead Medical Affairs Statistician at Bayer, specializing in health technology assessment (HTA), health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), and observational science. At Bayer, Antonio leads cross-functional teams in providing inputs to life-cycle management strategies, publication plans, reimbursement requirements, HTA studies, and analyses for payers. Prior to his current role, Antonio provided support on the statistical aspects of evidence synthesis, HTA, and HEOR to contract research organizations such as IQVIA and ICON plc, and public bodies such as SickKids. Antonio holds a PhD in Statistical Science and an MSc in Machine Learning from University College London.
