    Hello,

As many of you know, the ASA has strongly supported Greek economist Andreas Georgiou, who spoke at last year's ASA meeting in Baltimore, including spearheading a letter of support signed by 46 organizations and professional societies as well as 1090 individuals.

I wanted to alert you to a crowdsourcing effort to help offset Georgiou's significant legal fees:

This effort is organized by Patrick Armstrong and Maximilian Reisch with the full support of the American Statistical Association and the Friends of Greece.

Dear Robin and ASA Connect Community,
I support this effort and have just made a contribution.  I hope you will consider doing likewise. Even in small amounts, a whole bunch of us together can make things a whole bunch better for Andreas Georgiou.
    Thank you,
    Ron

Thank you to the organizers and to Ron for the signal boost. I am glad the ASA is supporting Dr. Georgiou and I have made a contribution too.

I think you need to let others know where you could make the contribution. Maybe provide a link.

    Dear ASA Connect Community,

Thanks to the many of you who have contributed to the Andreas Georgiou legal defense fund. It's impressive that 240 people have contributed $27,600. The goal is $40,000 and the deadline has been extended to May 30:

    Thanks again,

Given the number of people and the total, it would be interesting to see what the distribution of contributed amounts looks like.

    Dear All,

I write to share the discouraging news we heard today that the Greek Supreme Court annulled the May 26, 2017 acquittal of Andreas Georgiou on charges of complicity against the state. This is the 2nd such annulment on these charges meaning that the next trial will amount to triple jeopardy.

The WSJ's Nektaria Stamouli has posted this article about today's developments: https://www.wsj.com/articles/greek-high-court-keeps-alive-case-tied-to-debt-crisis-1526325544

For background, you can see the June 2017 blog post by Robin Mejia, Ron Wasserstein and me: Statistician Prosecuted: Latest Developments in Andreas Georgiou Case. We hope to have an updated blog post soon.

    Best,
    Steve
