    Job Description: Chair of the Department of Data Science

    The University of Mississippi Medical Center invites nominations and applications for the position of chair of the Department of Data Science (umc.edu/datascience), one of three departments in the John D. Bower School of Population Health. The Department of Data Science was established in 2016 and houses twelve full-time and five part-time/secondary faculty with research foci in applied biostatistics, clinical trials, longitudinal analysis, statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, machine learning, and image analysis. Four full-time biostatisticians also support biomedical research activities across the institution. The Department of Data Science is home to eighteen graduate students currently enrolled in Biostatistics & Data Science master's and doctoral programs.

     

    The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in statistics, biostatistics, computer science, data science, or a closely-related discipline. The candidate should have a nationally recognized research program in a data science field with a successful record of mentorship and extramural funding. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to graduate education, scholarship, and service. The candidate should exhibit a vision for data management and data governance and have academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership experience. 

     

    The chair of the Department of Data Science reports to the dean of the School of Population Health and is integral to several institutional initiatives, including the Jackson Heart Study, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research, and the Memory Impairment and Neurodegenerative Dementia Center. The chair oversees the budgetary, administrative, and personnel issues of the department, helping to grow collaborations and partnerships both on and off campus.
