The Statistician as a Hero

Frequently we statisticians are regarded as the folks in the office developing sampling plans and reviewing data.  But there are times that the statistician gets out of the office and goes where the rubber meets the road in potentially dangerous areas to do his or her work. Two examples that come to mind are Bill Hunt who did onsite air quality measurements right after the Gulf War, and Holly Shulman who went right into the path of the Zika mosquitoes.

But I would like to hear of more of these types of adventures and am seriously considering highlighting some of them in my monthly President's Corner in the AmStat News. So please tell me your time out of the office where the statistical work needed to be done in a relatively dangerous area.    Be a hero!

    Thanks,

    Barry
