    Title

    Confusing Statistical Terms

    Abstract

Applied statistics has a terminology problem.

We have technical terms that mean something different than their everyday meanings (Odds, Random). We have both single terms with multiple meanings (Factor, Beta) and multiple terms with a single meaning, sometimes with subtle differences (Mixed, Multilevel, and Hierarchical Linear Models). And finally, there are terms with the same definition, but with different implications in different research contexts or fields of application (Confounding, Independent Variable).

All of these issues make communication with clients and collaborators especially hard when they understand a term differently than you think they do. Join us to review and untangle over twenty of these confusing terms. It will help you anticipate where others are likely to get confused, know which words to choose carefully, and communicate effectively.
