    Tom Lang, a well-known author/instructor/editor on publishing in biomedical research (and former ASA/JSM CE presenter), is recruiting a new instructor for a 5-week on-line version of his 3-day on-site course, "Interpreting & Reporting Biostatistics" which he teaches for the University of Chicago's Medical Writing and Editing Program in the Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies.

    Overview. Interpreting and reporting (but not performing) the most common statistical tests and procedures used in the general practice of evidence-based medicine: basic statistical concepts and reasoning, various types of data and their analyses, assessing the design and statistical aspects of scientific research.

    Text. Lang, TA and Secic, M (2006). How to Report Statistics in Medicine: Annotated Guidelines for Authors, Editors, and Reviewers, 2nd Edition.

    Topics covered. Data types and descriptive statistics; confidence intervals; hypothesis testing; p-values and statistical power; interpreting statistical material in published articles and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of such work; association, correlation, and regression analyses; randomized trials; diagnostic tests and Bayesian thinking; measures of risk.

    Important. The teaching materials used in recent offerings of both on-site and on-line courses will be provided to the new on-line instructor.
