    The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) is seeking a Statistician for the Office of Statistical and Economical Analysis (OSEA), within the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).  BTS is a principal federal statistical agency that develops key information on the extent, use, and consequences of all forms of transportation.  BTS is responsible for leading the development of high quality transportation data and statistics, including geospatial data and information; and advancing their effective uses in both public and private decision making. 

     

    This position is responsible for providing statistical and data analytical support to the Confidential Close Call Data Program whereby the incumbent will be required to plan, initiate and conduct a broad and significant range of duties to help identify gaps and inconsistencies in the data collected, through scribing for confidential interviews, data collection, data entry, and tracking cases which provide analysts a body of data that can be used to inform and create policy.  The incumbent will work closely with other statisticians, economists, analysts, and transportation specialists by capturing confidential data through telephone interviews that would otherwise go unreported.  The incumbent will work with senior analysts to conduct research and identify emerging trends using analytical and evaluative techniques; review and interpret collected data to identify solutions to problems and help implement those solutions. 

     

    The incumbent will also assist in the collection of human factor and equipment failure data by scribing for industry analysts during confidential interviews; collecting and processing data from interviews with accuracy and efficiency; processing information on equipment failures reported to BTS; populating a database housed on a closed network with the information collected and retrieving data to support statistical analyses necessary for status, quarterly and annual reports.
