    Hi all,

Here are the minutes I took today (below and attached):

    CAS Meeting minutes

    • Attending: Donna, Nicole, Erin, Mark, Chuck, Eric, Shelley,
    • What happened at JSM 2016
      • Sunday JSM meeting (Chuck, Amit, and Erin)--quick
        • Collaboration proposal could include a workshop for section leaders/chairs
          • Oval table discussion for a future JSM for chair-elects. Exercises to increase collaboration between sections/chapters.
          • Can fuse collaboration and mentoring to discuss ways sections and chapters can help each other.
      • Sunday Membership Council meeting (Chuck)
        • CAS chair typically attends that meeting to touch base with other committees
        • Leadership training committee got everyone's attention, want to distribute the skills they teach widely in ASA, more than just a workshop at JSM
        • Talked about encouraging collaboration among committees and between sections
      • Monday Social Mixer
        • Good turnout! Partially because it was advertised at Eric's session immediately preceding the mixer.
        • "How can I get onto the Committee?" was a common question.
          • We could email Friends of CAS with "Ways to get involved with CAS" which would be the first step to getting onto the committee.
          • Honorary title for active friends of CAS.
          • Create subcommittees of CAS to let Friends of CAS join and help out.
      • Tuesday, Roadmap for Promoting Statistical Collaboration
        • 38 people attended (at one point in time)
        • Eric, as chair, got people to move up closer to the front to activate discussion
        • Everybody who talked thought the panel went really well.
        • Recommendations for revisions of the survey.
        • Erin says that everyone who walked out of the session had a huge smile of excitement on their face. Giddy and slightly high.
        • Mark will start a page of notes and circulate it for additions. And will start a list of contacts we made during the panel discussion.
        • CAS can collaborate with ASA to make a more representative sample to answer the survey.
          • Could collaborate with sections and add a question on section membership to evaluate how wide participation in the survey is.
      • Tuesday Mentoring Workshop
        • Very few new attendees
        • Not nearly as good as last year. Not worth continuing in its current format.
        • Advertising was good in Amstat News, but attendance was dismal.
        • Lessons learned
          • Panelists this year rambled (old-timers). Words were very helpful but not engaging to a young audience.
        • Mark took videos of Rochelle's talk and the panel discussion. He will upload them to share with Donna.
      • Mark is trying to line up a Master's Notebook article based on "My Life as a Statistical Consultant" session chaired by Maggie Niu.
    • New Presidential Initiatives of Barry Nussbaum
      • Engage members of other statistical societies to become more inclusive (especially with Asian members), chaired by David Morganstein.
      • Forming partnerships with Stats with Stories to expand ASA’s podcasts to improve statistical literacy and statistics in media/journalism.
      • Create a virtual museum of statistics The House of Statistics with lots of interactive games and video. Committee chaired by Eric Laber at NCSU.
    • JSM invited session proposal due September 6
      • "Collaboration: It's Essential!"
        • Could be a session on the continuation of our Roadmap
        • It helps to have another committee promise to co-sponsor.
          • Section on Statistical Consulting
          • Q&P
          • The ad-hoc statistical leadership training committee led by Gary Sullivan (John Eltinge, Amanda Golbeck, Vaneeta Grover, Bonnie Lafleur, Colleen Mangeot, Seestrom, Matthew Gerka, and others)
            • Erin will reach out to Gary Sullivan to ask for a recommendation
          • Others
        • Could incorporate collaborations with Asian members
        • We need 3-6 panelists for an invited session
          • 3 panelists plus an organizer and chair from CAS
          • 3 others
            • Erin will ask Gary Sullivan for a recommendation
          • Collaboration role play between panelists
          • Talking about collaboration in their world (not just applied)
            • Collaborating on methodology
            • Collaborating with investigators (biopharm, medicine)
        • Eric would be interested in chairing the panel (but he's speaking and discussing in different proposals). Mark is interested. Nicole is interested in chipping in. Shelley doesn't have any other invited sessions conflicting. Can ask Friends of CAS if they'd like to help and be a panelist.
        • Mark will rough draft the abstract.
        • We will continue to organize the session via email.
      • Erin would like to present on evidence based interventions.
