    Hey everyone,

    I mentioned a suggestion to post something in June's AmStat News.  Well the deadline has passed and I haven't delivered, unfortunately.

    What I have so far is very brief.  How can be enhance the article to draw positive attention?  Have I started in the right direction?

    Thanks!
    Jennifer

    Calling All Applied Statisticians

    Are you making plans to attend JSM?  Before you book your flight check out Thursdays offerings!  The Committee on Applied Statisticians (CAS) is sponsoring a panel discussion "The World of Applied Statistics: Where Do YOU Fit In?" featuring speakers Bob Rodrigez (SAS) , Nat Schnecker (NHS), Christy Chuang-Stein (Pfizer), Keith Schleicher (CapitolOne) and Amarjot Kaur (Merck).

    <inset> The abstract follows. Panelists across different industries will discuss their current positions and responsibilities.  Each will describe themselves as an applied or consulting statistician, and share their career success, career track, training/education and perspective on career growth for the young statistician with the audience.

     Define what it means to be an applied statistician in your industry/field.  What skill set is fundamental for success as an applied statistician in your industry/field?  What personality traits are important for success as an applied statistician in your industry/field?

    Did you have to make any dynamic changes to be successful as an applied statistician?  What experiences, outside of your academic preparation, made an impact on your success as an applied statistician?

    Panelists to provide advice for the junior statistician...

    How do you measure success on the job and in your career?  Does your success depend on your industry or educational background?  What are the skill sets that are important to be successful in your career?  What are some ways that young people starting their careers can develop and broaden the skills necessary for success?  What  other advice would you give to the young statistician?

    Have you taken more management or leadership roles and moved away from practicing technical statistical analyses?  If so, do you miss working on applied and technical problems? What are advantages and disadvantages of your current role/career track as an applied statistician?

    <end inset>

    Additionally, look for the CAS social mixer, which is open to all.  Join other applied statisticians for a chance to mingle and network!  Students, please attend.  This is your opportunity to talk with potential mentors who can offer you career advice and interviewing tips.  All, bring your ideas!  How can the ASA serve the applied statistician?
