co-sponsoring JSM sessions

Dear CAS,  Christy was kind enough to forward the email below.  Please take a look at the JSM program and see if there are any sessions you feel we should sponsor.  Is anyone willing to take the lead on this?  Thanks, Jennifer

    --------------------------------------

    Dear Committee Chairs:

I received the following message from the JSM Meeting Department -

"Only a few ASA committees have requested cosponsoring JSM session in the past. Please know, we would be happy for any ASA Committees to review the online program and let us know to which sessions they would like to add their cosponsorship.

If you find that any of the ASA committees under the Membership Council wish to add their group as a cosponsor, they should send an email to meetings@amsstat.org listing any sessions they would like to cosponsor. We ask that they include the session #, Title and primary sponsor in the list.

We are currently working on changes to the program from the speaker confirmation emails sent out in the past two weeks, but hope to have all changes made and cosponsors added by the end of this month.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    Thank you,

    Kathleen

    Director of Meetings"

Please take a look at the on-line JSM program (available now) and see if your committee wants to co-sponsor some sessions. If yes, please send the information requested in Kathleen's note to meetings@amstat.org.

    Thanks much,

    Hey everyone,

Asking one person to take the lead in reviewing the JSM program would be a big job for anyone.  Thanks to Christy for pointing this out to me.

Could we agree to each do some of the review?  How about the following?

    Invited Topic Contributed
    Sun 7/31 Mark Greg
    Mon 8/1 Amarjot Jack
    Tues 8/2 Keith Erin
    Wed 8/3 Barbara Marlene
    Thurs 8/4 Jennifer Jennifer

What does that mean?  I will look strictly at Thursday and only Invited and Topic Contributed sessions.  Erin, for example, would look only at Tuesday and only at Topic Contributed sessions.  etc.

Could we set May 6th as our "deadline"?  Post to our egroup those sessions you think CAS should co-sponsor.  I can then send one email on to ASA meetings on behalf of the committee.

I did not include Contributed sessions in our review but please do feel free to review if you wish.

    Thanks!
    Jennifer

    Hi All,

Could someone give some background on what it means to cosponsor a session?
I assume we are looking at sessions that would be of particular interest to the applied statistician?

    Sorry for my ignorance.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hey Greg,

Thanks for your question.  I must admit that I don't have a good answer - I guess I am just making my own assumptions about what it means.

To my knowledge, co-sponsoring a session does not make us accountable or give us any responsibilities for the session.  As far as I can tell, co-sponsoring a session gives the attendee the option to search on a committee (section, etc.) and see what all the committee is sponsoring.  So, I don't think we have to be perfect but rather target sessions that may be of interest to applied statisticians.  I guess I think about sessions that sound more like case studies and less like theoretical simulations.

Do you think that is a good plan?

Invited sessions have to be sponsored by a section and can be co-sponsored by a committee.  Committees are given one opportunity for an invited session and unfortunately neither of our proposals were awarded an invited session.  I am not sure of rules beyond that.

    What do others think?

    Jennifer

    Hi all,

I looked through the Contributed Topics in the 2011 JSM Program for Monday, 8/1, and found the following sessions that matched up with CAS's four goals:

111 Statistical Programmers in the Pharmaceutical Industry
116 Non-Inferiority Trial Design Issues for Medical Devices
159 Advances in Adaptive Clinical Trials

Session 111 has a couple of talks that would be helpful to someone considering the career of statistical programmer.  Session 116 is a practical primer on non-inferiority trials that is generalizable beyond medical devices, and Session 159 is full of examples and practical advice.

Hi all, Jennifer I can review a day too. Agreed that the idea of co-sponsorship Is about PR for our committee. All relevant presentations should be up for consideration. ------------------------------------------- Erin Tanenbaum] -------------------------------------------

My understanding of sponsoring of sessions is consistent with what has been said by others that its a way to publicize our committee.  The more quality sessions  the committee's name is associated with the more visibility we get.  I'll be happy to review a day as well.

    Thanks!

Of the Tuesday Invited Papers/Panels, there was one session that sounds like one we ourselves would have created:

385- The World of Statistical Analysis Professionals

Of the remaining sessions, the ones which feel more applied to me are the following:

277 Recent developments in addressing multiplicity issues in clinical trials

316 Complex and massive multiple testing problems

383  Using paradata for field management, quality assurance, and statistical control

For Topic Contributed Papers/Contributed Papers for Sunday, below are what I think are candidates.

Jennifer ... for #70, you are the perfect person to tell me if this qualifies -- seems like this would be of great interest to an applied statistician working in Oncology?

14 - Clinical Trials: How to Make the Right Decision
    19 - Good Statistical Practice
    32 - Hypothesis Testing
60 - Statistical Programmers and Statistician Current Challenge, CDSIC
62 - Statistical Engineering: Creating Sustainable Business Solutions by Integrating Statistics with Science
70 - Topics in Oncology Studies

If anyone would care to review to see if you think any of these should not be included, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Greg
