    Hi Team,

I continue to get requests to join the CAS Mentor Program from people who missed this year's deadline.  I've been providing quick responses to-date, but thought it would be more appropriate to provide a detailed response.  Amarjot and either Eric or Marlene, could you please review this and provide comments or corrections where appropriate?  Once I receive the go-ahead, I'll send this to those who have recently emailed me.  Please note that the new contact for sending resumes is our new CAS email address.

Thank you for your interest in the Committee on Applied Statistics Statisticians (CAS) Partnership ASA Mentorship Program.  We are in our first year and have started a pilot mentorship program for 2013.  Mentors and Mentees were self selected and provided a resume/CV as well as responded to a brief survey before being matched with another Mentor or Mentee in July of this year.

Our goal in the first year was to initiate the program, match Mentors and Mentees, monitor their progress, and make recommendations for 2014.  We then plan to initiate a larger pilot in 2014 based on the feedback we receive from this year's program.

Did you miss the deadline for 2013?  Our committee is sorry that the program has started already.  To ensure a high quality match, we will continue to collect resumes/cv's for interested participants for 2014.  There will be 2 potential opportunities (current plan) in 2014 including a program for attendees of the Conference on Statistical Practice (2/20/2014 - 2/22/2014 in Tampa, Florida), and a mentorship program for all ASA applied statisticians.

Although we have not yet set deadlines for the programs, we encourage all participants to submit their resume/CV early.  For the Conference on Statistical Practice, the registration form will provide additional instructions including ways to participate.  For the program for all applied statisticians, please submit your resume early by:

    1. Email applied.statisticians@gmail.com
    2. In the subject line please write "CAS Mentorship 2014 2nd pilot"
    3. Include your name, contact information, whether you would like to participate as a Mentor or Mentee, and a copy of your resume or CV in either Word or pdf format.

Matching of mentors to mentees for the main program will likely occur in June or July of next year, although we may initiate new programs throughout the year when/if appropriate.  Since we are still in the pilot phase, our process is often changing and we appreciate your patience and interest in the program.  For more information, please visit the CAS website which is in the members' only section of the ASA website: http://community.amstat.org/CAS/mentoring1

    FAQ:

Q: What is the Committee on Applied Statistics Statisticians (CAS) Partnership ASA Mentorship Program?

A: it is a pilot program funded by the ASA Member Initiative Program.  We are currently in our first year of funding and have matched over 24 mentors and mentees together, provided program guidelines, and will continue to track their progress throughout the year.

Q: How do I find a Mentor or Mentee?

A: There are several programs currently available within the ASA.  The CAS web site provides links to all known active programs within the ASA along with information on how to become active in the CAS program.

Q: I'd like to request a specific type of Mentor or Mentee, how do I do that?

A: At the present moment, the number of individuals we are connecting is small.  We match Mentors to Mentees based on their area of interest, the topics they wish to address, and when possible other specific criteria.  It is, however, less likely that very specific requests will be met (e.g. 'I'd like to work with a Sampling Statistician in the Washington, DC area who works in the Government').  We believe that our matching process ensures that many of the needs of the participants are met, but we unfortunately do not have a large enough group to match for all specific requests.

Q: I'd like to find a mentor now.  Could you please recommend someone ASAP, I'd be willing to pay for their services.

A: Our program is voluntary and requires no payment of services.  We, however, do not have the capacity to match Mentors to Mentees year round.  To ensure a high quality of applicants, we collect resumes throughout the year and match Mentors to Mentees based on a pre-determined schedule.  If you are looking for someone immediately, or are interested in paying someone for their time, we recommend considering either a career coach or reaching out to possible mentors individually.

As I understand it, the plan for CSP is not for mentors/mentees to submit a full CV/resume, but two paragraghs (background and what do you want out of the program). Eric may have more details.

One of the reasons I did not submit as a mentor for CAS for the pilot is that I wasn't sure if you really wanted a 30+ page document - and if you did I'd need to update it first.

That's true. For the CSP we won't collect resumes/CVs. We'll just ask them what they want to get out of a mentoring program and what their main area is. If we mismatch mentors and mentees, oh well. At least we got them started.

Here are more details of what will happen at the CSP and our (CAS) involvement. When the text below from Steve Porzio mentions Eric and his "recruits", the "recruits" means members of CAS and Jennifer Gauvin.

Steve Porzio's proposal for CSP mentoring:

    1)      Individual decides to register for CSP 2014, visits the CSP registration page, which will include the usual registration materials, but also some text regarding the CSP mentoring program. Among other things, the note will say that we will automatically send CSP registrants information on our mentoring program (which will be offered at no cost, of course).

    2)      Each new registrant will be sent an email message further describing the program and offering a link to a participation form, which will ask the following:

    a.       Check-box indication if the registrant wishes to participate in the program as a mentor or mentee. At most one may be selected.

    b.      Text box that asks "What are your goals for participating in the CSP mentoring program?" Both the mentor and the mentee would enter this information.

    c.       Text box that asks "What is your primary area of interest (for mentees) or expertise (for mentors)?" Both the mentor and the mentee would enter this information.

    3)      Staff will send the information collected through the form to Eric Vance and/or the Committee on Applied Statisticians (Eric is on both the CSP and the CAS committees, for those who did not know). Before CSP, Eric and others he will recruit will match mentors and mentees based on their brief statements of what they want to get out of the program. They will send the interested registrants an email about their match and include a modified version of the (attached) CAS mentoring welcome packet. They will then invite the mentors and mentees to meet at CSP (time and place TBD) or to make other arrangements for when and where to meet. In the packet/email, Eric and his recruits will suggest that the mentor/mentee pairs make plans to have dinner together on Thursday after the Opening Mixer or lunch on Friday.

Eric, could you adjust my email then to take this into consideration?  How much detail should be included in this email, and/or could a web site be referenced instead to provide the additional detail?

    Hi Erin,

Below is a rewrite of your email. We don't have a website for further details, but the CSP mentoring program is simple:

    0. Register for CSP.
    1. Answer 3 questions.
    2. Read the email indicating your mentor/mentee and read the attached welcome packet.
    3. Meet your mentor/mentee during CSP.
    4. Continue your mentoring relationship.
    5. Answer a brief survey from CAS about your experience.

    Erin's email:

Thank you for your interest in the Committee on Applied Statistics Statisticians (CAS) Partnership ASA Mentorship Program. We are in our first year and have started a pilot mentorship program for 2013. 2) A second pilot mentorship program for all ASA applied statisticians.

Everyone who registers for the Conference on Statistical Practice (CSP) will be invited to participate in a mentorship program for CSP attendees. You will be asked to sign up for the program as either a Mentor or Mentee, to answer what are your goals for participating in the CSP mentoring program, and to fill out a text box for your primary area of interest (for Mentees) or expertise (for Mentors). Mentors and Mentees will be matched prior to CSP, will be emailed an introductory guide to mentoring, and will be encouraged to meet during CSP to begin the mentoring relationship.

For the program for all applied statisticians, please submit your resume/CV early by:

    1) Emailing applied.statisticians@gmail.com

    2) In the subject line please write "CAS Mentorship 2014 2nd pilot"

    3) Include your name, contact information, whether you would like to participate as a Mentor or Mentee, attach a copy of your resume or CV in either Word or pdf format, and state what you are hoping to gain from the program (why you are interested in being a Mentor or Mentee).

Matching of mentors to mentees for the second pilot program will likely occur in June or July of next year, although we may initiate new programs throughout the year when/if appropriate. Since we are still in the pilot phase, our process is often changing and we appreciate your patience and interest in the program. This looks great.  I made a couple minor changes, including asking them to provide a brief description of why they are interested in the program (in case some are thinking of writing a book), and I believe this is now ready to go.  Any last comments before I send this to the people who sent resumes past our deadline?
