The Department of Education (DoEd) National Center for Education System (NCES) released its updated Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) in June. The changes included new CIP Codes for data science, data analytics, and applied statistics.

The ASA uses the CIP codes for the ASA webpage tracking degree data for statistics and biostatistics, principally tracking the following categoriies over the last decade or so using the 2010 CIP codes:
The new CIP Codes for Data Science and Data Analytics are:
Another new CIP Code is for Applied Statistics:
The additional categories for data science and data analytics should be especially helpful for tracking the emergence of data science and data analytics programs, whose numbers have been seen enormous growth this decade. However, because of the previous lack of a CIP Code specific to data science/analytics - and therefore the use of many difference CIP codes for these program - it is hard to know the actual numbers. The best estimate that I'm aware of comes from the NCSU Analytics program: Graduate Degree Programs in Analytics and Data Science. I would expect the new codes to be used as early as 2020 for the release of the 2019 degree data.

The ASA responded to the DoEd call for comments on the proposed udpated CIP Codes in March, 2019.
