The Industrial Statistics Virtual Collaboratory - what it is and how you can get involved

The idea

At the 2015 Spring Research Conference, a panel discussion on collaborations prompted discussion on the part of a few SPES members. There are researchers looking for meaningful and impactful statistical problems to solve.  Industry and government have statistical problems that need solutions.  How can we connect the solvers to the problems? From this comes the idea of the Industrial Statistics Virtual Collaboratory (ISVC).

What is it?

The purpose of the ISVC is to facilitate (1) the origination of collaborations between practitioners and researchers, motivated by real statistical problems; and (2) the dissemination of current research to those practicing statistics.  Specifically,

  • practicing statisticians can submit collaborative research problems, in which they describe an outstanding research problem they have encountered, and request a collaborator;
  • statistical researchers and practitioners can present short research summaries of their or others’ work, highlighting the benefits for practitioners;
  • existing collaborators can provide summaries of collaboration that describe successful research partnerships between practitioners and researchers;
  • collaboration resources can be shared with the community.

Each type of message will be delivered in the form of a blog post. If you want to submit an entry to be posted on this blog, contact Byran Smucker (smuckerb@miamioh.edu). At present, you must be an ASA member in order to comment on the post but we welcome entries from anyone, whether ASA member or not. All you need is an interest in collaborating on problems that can be broadly construed as industrial statistics.

How can you get involved?

If you are interested in contributing, contact Byran Smucker (smuckerb@miamioh.edu). At present, submissions should be sent directly to the blog curator (Byran, initially), and should aim to be roughly three paragraphs in length.

First post

Look for the first substantive post on the ISVC to be the week of July 4!
