'Tis the Season

The holidays are here!  It seems like we just came back from our summer hiatus here at the Chapter and we're already fast approaching our annual December luncheon.  Fortunately, in spite of the early November snow storm we had, the weather has certainly cooperated so far making it pretty easy to get around town to see friends and family.
It was especially fun to watch #GivingTuesday really catch on this year.  This day was started in 2012 as an antidote to Black Friday and Cyber Monday to have a day during the holiday season that celebrates and encourages giving back and helping others through philanthropy and service.
While the American Statistical Association may not be top of mind when you think about #GivingTuesday and your own year-end giving, donating to the ASA is a great way to support the continued growth of the practice and profession of statistics.  Under the banner of GiveASA -  Fund the Future: Support Statistics, the ASA has a variety of ways to make a tax-deductible contribution.  Simply go to www.amstat.org to see and click on the "Giving to the ASA" button.  You'll see links to "Give Now" for a one-time contribution, as well as links to The Helen Walker and 1839 Societies for larger or planned gifts.  There is also information for employer matching if you're company offers such a program.
Best of all, you can direct your donation to the Chicago Chapter, so your giving directly supports our efforts here at home to improve statistical literacy.  We've been fortunate here at the CCASA to enjoy growing membership and involvement at our events for the last few years.  We're a strong organization that wants to do more.  Your support will enable us to create new programs for students and teachers alike right here in Chicagoland that will help inspire and educate the next generation of statisticians!

Thanks, the Board of the Chicago Chapter ASA wishes you a warm, safe, happy, holiday season.

Interesting question: Does that healthy holiday season need to be BPA free? Stats.org takes a look at the seventeen year long argument. The articles are great, but frankly they had me at the title: Anatomy of a Statistical Meltdown

December Luncheon
Join us for our December Luncheon. Our speaker will be
Karl W. Broman, Professor, Biostatistics & Medical Informatics, UW-Madison. We look forward to his talk, Interactive Graphics for Genetic Data

Abstract: The value of interactive graphics for making sense of high-dimensional data has long been appreciated but is still not in routine use. I will describe my efforts to develop interactive graphical tools for genetic data, using JavaScript and D3. (The tools are available as an R package: R/qtlcharts,http://kbroman.org/qtlcharts) I will focus on an expression genetics experiment in the mouse, with gene expression microarray data on each of six tissues, plus high-density genotype data, in each of 500 mice. I argue that in research with such data, precise statistical inference is not so important as data visualization.
