Luncheon: January 11, 2013: Are Statisticians First or Second responders: Some lessons from Haiti

Don't miss our January luncheon, "Are Statisticians First or Second responders: Some lessons from Haiti?" presented by Fritz Scheuren.

Haiti has been much in the news in recent years. The 2010 earthquake, subsequent relief efforts and the 2010/2011 presidential election were all widely reported. Not in the news were efforts made by statisticians from the American Statistical Association to do "data driven decision-making." The talk will begin with some context setting, both historic and geographic. Some of the history of Haiti results from repeated interventions by the United States and so we bear some responsibility. Anyway, our history forms a starting point framing current events. Details of the earthquake and its aftermath are covered with some pictorial reminders. Issues of sampling after the disaster posed some statistical challenges and these will be dealt with. The presidential election and concerns about ballot stuffing are also covered, including how the ballot stuffing allegations were addressed statistically. A small afterword on Haiti now and on its continuing needs will be opened for audience participation.

Speaker Bio: Fritz likes to call himself simply an "Old Shoe" because he has some wear on him and has [been] kicked around a while. Age adjusted, he has most of the professional credentials of ASA Chicago Chapter members. He will discuss a topic that grows out of his longtime interest in Human Rights, for which he received the Harry Roberts Award from the Chapter some years ago. You can read more on him in a September 2011 AMSTAT NEWS interview.

Lunch is $30 for CCASA members, $35 for non-members. Non-members, join CCASA for a year for only $15 and get the discount plus all of the other benefits of membership!

The Lucile Derrick Fund allows us to offer a discounted $10 ticket price to full time student members of CCASA who wish to attend.

Reduced fee parking available at the East Bank Club with validation. Please register for the luncheon by Thursday, January 10th.

Food Analytics? : Illustrating that the Big Data trend is leaving no area untouched, researcher Lada Adamic has developed an algorithm to predict how successful a recipe will turn out. She can predict with 80% accuracy how many stars a recipe will receive on a popular recipe site.
