Statistician of the Year Award Dinner
    Jay Kadane
    Emeritus Professor, Carnegie Mellon University

We are delighted to announce that Jay Kadane will be the recipient of the Statistician of the Year award this year.

Dr. Kadane has had a rich career in statistical science as Emeritus Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, author of hundreds of publications, and an early proponent of Bayesian statistics. Dr. Kadane was most recently awarded the coveted DeGroot Prize for his book, Principles of Uncertainty, which focuses on Bayesian fundamentals and the application of statistics in a wide array of fields.

Dr. Kadane was selected for the SOY award by past recipients based on his ongoing commitment to the statistical sciences which have influenced the fields of econometrics, political science, medicine, and much more. He has stayed true to his beliefs that statisticians must find a balance between theoretical and applied work and has served his community for almost 50 years.

The SOY dinner has become an outstanding tradition for the CCASA and we are excited to continue the honor. Statistics continues to have a major impact on global issues, and in keeping with this theme, Dr. Kadane will be delivering a talk on legal issues associated with statistics. One such topic that Dr. Kadane is particularly knowledgeable on is the repression of statistics in Argentina where the government has prevented the publishing of price statistics to estimate inflation.

Join us in celebrating the great contributions Mr. Kadane has made to the statistical community. We are pleased to host him and other distinguished members of the American Statistical Association and hope to see you all there.

Further, Professor Kadane will be giving a talk entitled " Repression of Statistics and Statisticians by the Argentine Government"

    Abstract:
In 2007, the Argentine government fired the professionals who were gathering and publishing price statistics to estimate inflation. In 2011, the same government fined, as is now threatening criminal sanctions against statisticians who privately publish inflation statistics different from those of the government. This talk reviews what is now happening in Argentina, and what's being done about it.

The Statistician of Year Award Dinner will take place on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at the East Bank Club in Chicago. The evening will begin at 6pm with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner and award presentation from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets for this event are $55 for members, $60 for non members and $27.50 for students.

Please register for the event by Friday October 19, 2012 at http://www.123signup.com/calendar?Org=chicagoasa

    Statistician Paul Green Passes Away
    s

We are deeply saddened by the passing away of Paul Green, Emeritus Professor of Marketing at the Wharton School.

    Per the Wharton press release:

As the S.S. Kresge Professor of Marketing, Paul was not only one of the most distinguished and influential marketing scholars of our time, but also a wonderful colleague who provided perspective and balance at all times. One of the major architects of modern marketing science and practice, he was known as the founder of conjoint analysis. The marketing discipline's familiarity with the utilization of Bayesian statistics, multidimensional scaling, clustering, and analysis of qualitative data are due in part to the pioneering work of Paul Green.

We wish his friends and family the best during these difficult times.

Demystifying Big Data: A Practical Guide to Transforming the Business of Government

The nonprofit foundation TechAmerican, which strives to "promot[e] technology led ideas that advance economic growth ", has released a report "Demystifying Big Data: A Practical Guide to Transforming the Business of Government".

Tech America states that this report will provide answers to:

What is Big Data, really? How is it defined? What capabilities are required to succeed? How do you use Big Data to make intelligent decisions? How will agencies effectively govern and secure huge volumes of information, while protecting privacy and civil liberties? And perhaps most importantly, what value will it really deliver to the US Government and the citizenry we serve?

The CCASA has been an active participant in this discussion. Our September luncheon was a great talk by Brett Goldstein entitled "Modeling a Smarter City".
