[10/25/19 Update: The Charts below were updated to include the data through FY18.]

NIH just released the funding success rates for FY13, revealing that R01 (and equivalent) funding rates slipped to about 17%. Success funding rates for other NSF grants also slipped though the F31 (predoctoral training) edged up slightly to almost 30% but the F32 (postdoctoral training) slipping to about 24%, as shown in this figure:

For the perspective of Sally Rockey, NIH's Deputy Director for Extramural Research, on the FY13 funding success rates, see this "Rock Talk" blog entry. [1/24/14: See also the FASEB Analysis of the final FY13 NIH budget. 3/5/14 See also this 3/5 Sally Rockey "Rock Talk" blog entry, Comparing Success Rates, Award Rates, and Funding Rates.]

The increase in the F31 success rate may signal a prioritization by NIH on pre-doctoral training. A look at overall F31 funding since FY04 would support that, though the increase brings the total to a little less than $20 million.

To see guidance on applying for F31's and F32's, and Q&A's with past recipients of each, see these Amstat News and STATtr@ak pieces (and remember the F31 and F32 application deadlines are April 8, August 8, and December 8:
Remember there is also the F31 Diversity Fellowship, whose purpose is “to improve the diversity of the health-related research workforce.” Before applying for F31's and F32's, it's important to consider which Institutes are the most active. The next two tables have the FY13 Funding Rate and Total Amounts by Institute
