ASA at 175 – Where to Find News About the ASA

By Ronald Wasserstein posted 04-06-2014 10:00

During 2014, it is easier than ever for ASA members, and everyone else, to find out what is going on at the ASA and in the statistics profession.  There are now FOUR great places to look.  Here they are, in order that they came into existence:

  1. Amstat News online

Amstat News has been around since the 70’s, became a colorful magazine in the 90’s, and in the 00’s ASA launched the online presence of the magazine.  Amstat News Online has the full contents of the print magazine plus bonus content, and has the additional feature that readers can comment on the articles.

  2. ASA website

Originally created in the 90’s, the website remains the number one place for fast-breaking news.  When you visit, be sure to check out “Statisticians in the News” and other informative features.

  3. Significance website

Significance magazine was launched in 2004, and the ASA joined the Royal Statistical Society in publishing it in 2010. While you can get access to the delightful content of Significance magazine through this website, the best feature is the additional content covering the world of statistics from a variety of lenses.  New material is added almost daily. Look for a major update to this site soon.  (Speaking of the world of statistics, check out http://worldofstatistics.org, the successor to the International Year of Statistics.)

  4. The 175th anniversary blog

You’ve already arrived at a major new communications tool. Throughout 2014, I am writing about the activities of the ASA in this “ASA at 175” blog. A new blog appears roughly every other day, and covers “all things ASA.”  Here you will find the most in-depth and behind the scenes coverage of the ASA.

Here’s a bonus location for ASA information: Log in to ASA Members Only, then click on “My Volunteers Activities” then on “Informational Slides about the ASA.”  You’ll find slide sets that explain important activities of your association.  You are welcome to download them and share the information with others.

So, now you have four (or even five) great sources of information about the ASA.  Have a specific question for which you can’t find the answer?  Then go to source #6, and write me at ron@amstat.org

(This blog is largely a repeat of an article I wrote for the “Chapter Chatter” newsletter that will be distributed soon.)

In 2014, the American Statistical Association is celebrating its 175th anniversary.  Over the course of this year, this blog will highlight aspects of that celebration, and look broadly at the ASA and its activities.  Please contact ASA Executive Director Ron Wasserstein (ron@amstat.org) if you would like to post an entry to this blog.
