Welcome to the University at Albany - SUNY Chapter

Announcements

The University at Albany - SUNY Chapter of ASA was established in December 2016. Composed of graduate students from various departments, the purpose of our chapter is to encourage student interactions while enriching the research experiences in quantitative and qualitative studies.

We accomplish these goals via providing a number of informal and rewarding activities each year, including an invited speaker for each semester, mentoring programs, and a variety of social gatherings. Currently an 11-member committee along with two faculty members forms our student chapter.

Sponsored by ASA, we host two seminars during the academic year. The seminars are held in the evening, with pizza or other refreshments provided. There will be e-mails announcing the invited speaker and topic for each semester. In addition to these exciting seminars, we may invite a faculty speaker each spring, who will meet with graduate students and give a talk.

Our mentoring programs provide extra support for the new graduate students. Mentors are Master's or PhD students who have been studying at UAlbany for at least one year and have volunteered to participate in the mentoring program. Based on research interests, each new student can be assigned a graduate student to serve as their mentor. The mentor is a friendly guide as well as a source of information.

Multidisciplinary in nature, our student chapter welcomes graduate students from all departments. Please feel free to contact our officers if you are interested in joining our activities.

SEMINAR | QUALITATIVE STUDY AND TEXT MINING
Ivey Hsieh, PhD Candidate
Political Science, Rockefeller College, UAlbany

April 21, 2017 | 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Text mining has emerged as a prominent research method used in the field of qualitative research. Having conducted numerous interviews in the border regions of Isarael, Yeufen (Ivey) Hsieh graciously shares with us her experiences in using NVivo to analyze qualitative data.

Our very first seminar was running successfully. We recruited several new graduate students and really had fun when talking about doing research. "It feels like we can do research together without feeling tired," said one attendee. An the end of this seminar, all participants agree that passion, perseverance, and patience is the key to academic achievement and success.
