Science Policy Fellowships: Statisticians Should Apply

[12/10/13: The fellowships in this blog entry are annual so information below should be read accordingly. For example the call for the California Science Technology Policy Fellowship just went out and has a February 28, 2014 application deadline. The 2014 IDA fellowship can be here.]

I recently learned of two policy fellowship opportunities for scientists. Since such fellowships are an effective means of inserting a statistical perspective to policymaking, I wanted to share these opportunities:

While the deadline has passed for this year, it is not too early to start planning your application for the 2014-2015 AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships. This program has a long, successful history of placing scientists and engineers throughout the federal government, many of whom stay on for further influence well beyond their fellowship year. Many professional societies - including the American Geophysical Union, the American Mathematical Society and the American Sociological Association - also participate in the related Congressional Science Fellowship.

K-12 Statistics Teachers should also start planning to apply for the 2014-2015 Einstein Fellowship to spend a year on Capitol Hill or in a federal agency. ASA Member Sharon Hessney served this fellowship 2011-2012, as reported in this Amstat News article, Sharon Hessney: From Wall Street to Capitol Hill.
