Walter Shewhart and a Century of the Control Chart
Penny Reynolds
University of Florida
One hundred years ago, Walter Shewhart submitted a one-page memo to his line manager. It presented a prototype control chart, and marks the launch of the entire field of statistical process control and quality improvement. Although the control chart is now seen as a brilliantly simple and powerful statistical innovation, it nearly disappeared, not once but several times, over the next 60 years. I will discuss Shewhart's ideas, how he came up with the idea of the control chart, the factors that contributed to its near-demise, and what elements are required to give traction to statistical innovation.
