Abstract: Data science, while promising significant advancements, often grapples with high costs and uncertain returns on investment. This challenge has prompted a shift in expectations, with investors and hiring managers increasingly emphasizing the importance of data scientists delivering tangible business value. Our talk applies the Pareto Principle, commonly known as the 80/20 Rule, in the realm of data science. This principle, typically understood as achieving 80% of outcomes from 20% of efforts, offers a strategic framework for enhancing the efficiency and impact of data science initiatives.
We will explore the implementation of this principle through a dual perspective: its role in data analysis and its potential to optimize the contributions of a data scientist. The session will feature an overview of two recent machine learning projects undertaken by Glen - one applying Bayesian Nonparametrics in medical timeseries monitoring and the other applying computer vision in agricultural technology. This will set the stage for a comprehensive discussion on various approaches to apply the 80/20 rule, aiming to maximize the efficacy and value derived from data science projects.
Presenter: Glen Wright Colopy is the Head of Data Science & Statistics at Wildfell, a startup specializing in custom software and data science solutions for the biotech and life science industries. Glen's day-to-day work is as a hands-on fullstack data science contributor, focused on helping companies (typically startups) succeed in their data science & AI initiatives. His focus lies in statistical machine learning, with a particular interest in healthcare and life sciences. Glen holds a Doctorate in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford. His work includes two patents in vital sign monitoring and 16 publications, most of which are centered around medical machine learning.
An active contributor to the Statistical Learning & Data Science Section of the American Statistical Association, Glen has been involved since 2015, initially serving as a webmaster before taking on the role of Program Chair. He also hosts the Data & Science podcast, sponsored by SLDS, and serves as a section editor for the Journal of Data Science. His dedication and contributions to the field were recognized with the SLDS 2023 Outstanding Service Award.
