    Dear ASA Community,

The NIH Office of Disease Prevention reached out to thank ASA members for their input to the call from last April and to announce the release of their strategic plan. See below.

    Steve

    Dear Dr. Wasserstein,

Last year, the NIH Office of Disease Prevention (ODP) asked you and the American Statistical Association to help inform our next strategic plan by encouraging your members to submit feedback to a Request for Information. We received a robust response and following more than a year of hard work, we are proud to announce that our new Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2024–2028, Prevention Research: Creating a Healthier Future for All, has officially been released! As we emphasize in the plan, to make a real difference in the health and well-being of everyone in the nation, the future of prevention research must prioritize interventions; address the most common causes of injury, illness, and death; and advance health equity.

We invite you to read more below about how the office will work to increase the scope, quality, dissemination, and impact of prevention research supported by NIH over the next five years. Please also share the news with your networks! You can use the attached promotional toolkit and the one-page overview (PDF) of our strategic priorities and cross-cutting themes to help spread the word.

We look forward to working together as we put this plan in motion to foster discovery, bridge the gap between research and practice, and create a healthier future for all. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at prevention@nih.gov if you have any questions about the efforts ODP will be focusing on in the coming years.

    Many thanks,

    NIH Office of Disease Prevention

       Official announcement

Introducing the ODP Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2024–2028

Prevention Research: Creating a Healthier Future for All

We are excited to present the Office of Disease Prevention's (ODP's) Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2024–2028 (FY24–28), Prevention Research: Creating a Healthier Future for All. It outlines how our office will work to increase the scope, quality, dissemination, and impact of prevention research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) over the next five years.

    Strategic Priorities

Our strategic plan is organized around seven priorities designed to advance prevention research through innovation and collaboration. These strategic priorities leverage the tools, resources, and knowledge generated across the office.

    • Conduct Portfolio Analysis and Impact Assessment
    • Identify Research Gaps
    • Improve Prevention Research Methods
    • Promote Collaborative Research
    • Advance Tobacco Regulatory and Prevention Science
    • Address Health Disparities
    • Communicate Efforts and Findings

    Cross-Cutting Themes

Five cross-cutting themes provide areas of opportunity for new ODP activities and help guide our decision-making.

    • Risk and protective factors for illness, injury, and the leading causes of death
    • Social determinants of health
    • Development and testing of preventive interventions
    • Dissemination and implementation research
    • Workforce development and research capacity building

    Thank you!

ODP created this strategic plan with significant input from our colleagues and partners across NIH, the federal government, the broader biomedical research community, and the public. We are grateful for your feedback as we refined our priorities and evaluated our role in advancing prevention research. Our office recognizes that we will only succeed by working together to foster discovery, bridge the gap between research and practice, and create a healthier future for all.
