A webinar introduction to the UCSAS-USOPC 2024 data challenge is scheduled for 7-8 pm ET, Thursday, September 14, 2023. The webinar is open to the public but registration is needed. Please register at https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/weblink/register/r4476023b358eb896048fc3342173e2ba.

We've received positive feedback about the change of UCSAS from fall to spring, which lines up with the academic year better. We'd appreciate your using this data in your teaching in Fall 2023 and encouraging your students to participate in the challenge.

    Thanks,
    Jun Yan

    Dear Colleagues,

    (Sorry for cross-posting.)

We are pleased to announce the release of the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) 2024 Data Challenge for the forthcoming UCSAS 2024. Based on the athlete level data from recent major gymnastic events, the goal of the challenge is to identify the group of 5 athletes who will enable the Team USA Olympic Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics teams to optimize success in Paris 2024. See https://statds.org/events/ucsas2024/challenge.html for more details about the challenge.

The challenge is open to students only. We timed it so that it can be used as a course project in statistics or data science in Fall 2023. We would appreciate professors teaching in the fall helping us spread the word and encourage students to participate. A virtual training session will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023. The deadline of submission is January 15, 2024. Finalists will be notified by February 15, 2024, and invited to present at the 2024 UCSAS in April 12-13, 2024. The winning teams will have the opportunity to showcase their work, with all travel, registrations, and expenses paid, at the 2024 U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Data, Analytics & Technology Summit in Colorado Springs, CO, providing them with increased exposure and potential opportunities for future collaborations.

The revamped, 5th UCSAS (https://statds.org/events/ucsas2024/) will be held on April 12-13, 2024, at UConn. We are expanding it to one day and a half to accommodate more oral presentations. By shifting the symposium from fall to spring, we are aligning it with a less saturated calendar of similar events and giving students more time to prepare their submissions to the event. The event features two distinguished keynote speakers, Doug Fearing,  Co-Founder & CEO at Zelus Analytics, and Lauren (Poe) Parolin, Sports Analytics Developer, ESPN. Stay connected for further updates.

Community support will be appreciated. Please contact Jun Yan (jun.yan@uconn.edu) if you are interested in joining the challenge/poster judging teams or sponsoring the event.

    Dear colleagues,

The webinar introduction to the USOPC data challenge attracted 230+ registrants. We are very grateful for your help in spreading the words. Here are some updates about the challenge

+ Participation registration deadline: November 1, 2023; register at https://forms.gle/AZoTYjYZEiydNExR9; given the challenge's popularity, we need to know the number of participating teams to adequately prepare and recruit the needed judges.
+ The recording of the webinar is available in the YouTube channel of Connecticut Data Science Lab at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mte0zp4Ufw8
+ A summary of questions and answers is available at https://statds.org/events/ucsas2024/challenge.html.

The event motivated us to create a master-list of student data science/analytics clubs/organizations for communications on data science and related events for students. We'd appreciate it if you can pass the registration link (https://forms.gle/KW6KDFbXtwUEne7v9) to student leaders of such organizations.

    Best regards,
    Jun Yan
