CALL FOR NOMINATIONS A Data Infrastructure for Measuring the Care Economy
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking nominations for experts for a new consensus study focused on a data infrastructure for measuring the care economy. The committee will assess current data available on the care economy considered broadly, including care givers, care for adults and children, long-term care, and intersections with both the health care and education sectors. The study report will provide conclusions and recommendations on the potential for improving, expanding, and integrating the care data infrastructure to more fully understand the care economy in the United States.
Using these suggestions, National Academies staff will be looking to build a committee of approximately 10-12 experts in addition to collecting information for potential speakers, participants, and peer reviewers for any publications resulting from the activity. Based on the Statement of Task, we are looking for expertise particularly in the following areas:
- statistics and survey methodology
- economics and quantitative social science
- technical and policy aspects of measuring informal and formal market work in the care sector
- caregiving organizations, caregivers, and care workers
Please submit all nominations (for yourself or others) through the online nomination form by November 29, 2024.

The Committee on National Statistics was established in 1972 at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to improve the statistical methods and information on which public policy decisions are based. The committee carries out studies, workshops, and other activities to foster better measures and fuller understanding of the economy, the environment, public health, crime, education, immigration, poverty, welfare, and other public policy issues. It also evaluates ongoing statistical programs and tracks the statistical policy and coordinating activities of the federal government, serving a unique role at the intersection of statistics and public policy. The committee's work is supported by a consortium of federal agencies through a National Science Foundation grant, a National Agricultural Statistics Service cooperative agreement, and several individual contracts.
