  • 1.  LISA 2020 Update

    Posted 10-20-2022 17:31

Today-October 20, 2022-is the second anniversary of the Third World Statistics Day (10/20/2020), which is when the LISA 2020 Network announced that it had 28 full members, surpassing its goal of creating a network of at least 20 statistics and data science collaboration laboratories ("stat labs"). The vision of LISA 2020 is to build statistics and data science capacity in developing countries to transform evidence into action for the benefit of society.

I'm taking this opportunity to provide a quick update on the LISA 2020 Network to ASA members.

We now have 35 full members, with several more stat labs in the process of gaining membership. This past May we had 90 people from 30 stat labs from 10 developing countries participate in our in-person Sustainability Symposium held in Kumasi, Ghana. There we shared best practices from the various labs and generally had a great time.

One of the best accomplishments of the LISA 2020 Network has been the publication by CRC Press of its peer-reviewed and open access book, "Promoting Statistical Practice and Collaboration in Developing Countries." The book can be accessed at bit.ly/LISA2020Book

The network recently approved a new charter and by-laws to establish regional networks and volunteer officers. Check out our website: www.LISA2020.org

Finally, some more numbers. Between January 2019 and March 2022 (which is the most recent period of robust metrics), the 35 LISA 2020 stat labs have collaborated on a total of 1,467 projects, trained 2,401 students to be collaborative statisticians, taught 399 workshops to 14,909 attendees, and have published 146 peer-reviewed publications.

    Happy World Statistics Day anniversary!
