I am truly sad to learn of Steve Fienberg's death. I first met Steve at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Toronto in 1983 where I was fascinated by a paper he gave comparing probability sampling with experimental design. He tolerated my very naive questions which impressed me enormously as I thought of him as an elder statesman of statistics. How strange to realise in retrospect that he was only 41 years old at the time! Steve became a close and very loyal friend. His huge range of contributions to the application of statistics in social science and science is unmatched. JSM and ISI meetings just won't be the same without his carefully planned dinners at the best restaurant in the town. I will miss him. My thoughts are with Joyce and their family.
