2018 NISS Writing Workshop for Junior Researchers at the JSM

  • 1.  2018 NISS Writing Workshop for Junior Researchers at the JSM

    Posted 04-30-2018 16:41

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) will conduct a writing workshop for junior researchers in statistics and data science at the 2018 Joint Statistical Meetings in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The workshop is designed for researchers with a Ph.D. awarded or anticipated during 2012-2018 in statistics, biostatistics or a related field. Attendance at the Writing Workshop is limited and applicants within 0-3 years' post-PhD and members of the participating societies will receive preference.

The workshop consists of two parts and will take place on two days (Sunday, July 29th; Tuesday, July 31st). The Sunday session (7:30 – 3:30) will focus on good writing and the publication process. The Tuesday session (7:30 – 10:30) will focus on specific issues for writers whose native language is not English.

A particularly valuable part of the workshop is that the workshop personalizes to each participant. At the time of registration, an applicant needs to submit a working draft that he/she is not planning to submit for publication before the workshop. The draft should be the work of the applicant and has not yet been mentored by a senior colleague or a skillful writer. The submitted work will be handled confidentially.

Once an application is accepted, the applicant will be asked to confirm his/her interest by paying the $100 registration fee. A senior editor/mentor from the workshop will discuss with the attendee and make suggestions for improving or reworking the working draft.

This workshop has quite a long and successful history. Yet, each workshop is unique in its own way because of the energy and enthusiasm different participants bring to the workshop.

Thank you for your interest in the Writing Workshop at JSM.  We look forward to your application.
