    Dear ASA members,

The Section on Risk Analysis of the American Statistical Association is soliciting entries for a student paper competition for the 2021 Joint Statistical Meetings. Each year the section offers at least one student travel award to defray costs for attendance and presentation of their work at the Joint Statistical Meetings. For the 2021 student paper competition, up to two awards carrying a cash prize of $900 will be awarded, with two additional papers getting honorable mention based on their ranking.  This competition is open to all graduate and undergraduate students, full or part-time, attending an accredited academic program. The student must be a member of the Section on Risk Analysis or should join the section at the time of the paper submission. The contribution may be a theoretical development or may cover any of the numerous applications of risk analysis, including environmental risk, financial risk, the risk to engineering structures, health risks, risks to defense and national security, etc. Papers that have been accepted for publication are not eligible for the competition. Winners must present their work in a JSM session sponsored by the Section on Risk Analysis.

    Entrants should submit the following:

    1. A list of authors and contact information (the student must be the first author).
    2. A double-spaced manuscript in two versions: a regular manuscript with author information and a blinded manuscript without author information or other identifying information (such as reference(s), text). Both versions should include an abstract. We further require that the manuscript be no more than 20 pages double spaced (excluding tables, figures, and references) in 12-point font. Tables figures and the references are to be listed at the end of the paper.
    3. A reference letter from a faculty member familiar with the submitted work, stating the student status of the applicant and the publication status of the manuscript.

Entries should be sent to Indranil Ghosh, Chair of the Student Paper Award Committee, via email ghoshi@uncw.edu. The email should include the two versions of the completed manuscript as attachments in PDF format. All entries must arrive by 5 pm EST on December 27, 2020. Please include the words "Student Paper Award" in the subject line of the email. Manuscripts will be judged based on relevance and interest of the subject matter, the quality of writing, and of course the quality of the research itself. The result will be announced by January 17 and the winners will be required to submit their abstract to JSM by 11:59 pm, February 1, 2021. The winners are also expected to present his/her research findings in a topic contributed session at the JSM 2021 as appropriate.

We appreciate your spreading the words and encouraging your students to submit entries.
