We are excited to invite interested mentees and mentors to apply to participate in the mentoring program of the ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education for the upcoming year!

    The Program

Now in its sixth year, the aim of this 9-month mentoring program is to provide statistics and data science educators with career advice and mentoring. This can include discussions of teaching / curriculum building, career trajectory, potential research areas in statistics / data science education, and other professional goals. Typically, mentors and mentees meet remotely / in-person for a 30-minute discussion once a month, though this is flexible depending on mentee goals.

The program operates on a calendar year from August 1, 2022 – May 1, 2023. To participate, ASA membership is required, as is membership in the ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education.

Who can participate in the program?

We welcome all educators in the broader statistical and data science community including, but not limited to, K-12 schools, AP programs, community colleges, undergraduate and graduate programs, industry, and government.

We also welcome PhD students who will graduate in or before the 2022 / 2023 academic year. We will strive to match individuals who are applying for a job in academia or statistics/data science education, or want other mentoring related to teaching / education work.

    Mentees and Mentors

You can participate in the program in the following roles:

    • Mentees are individuals wanting to discuss or learn more about aspects of statistics and data science education with more experienced statistics and data science educators. These discussions include, but are not limited to, teaching methods and styles, scholarship in statistics / data science education, career paths / transitions, job search, etc.

    • Mentors are individuals who are experienced statistics and data science educators looking to help mentees by discussing aspects of teaching and scholarship, career options, and / or providing advice during a job search. Mentors also help mentees make connections in the larger statistics and data science education community.

If you are unsure which role is the best for you, please feel free to contact Nicole Dalzell (dalzelnm at wfu dot edu).

We work to match mentors and mentees based on several criteria, including career goals, teaching interests, etc., with the goal of setting both mentor and mentee up for a successful  mentoring relationship.
