The Department of Statistics at the University of Connecticut (UConn) is proud to host the 35th New England Statistics Symposium (https://symposium.nestat.org) on May 22 - 25, 2022. As a flagship annual event of the New England Statistical Society (https://nestat.org), the symposium has been bringing together statisticians from all over New England and beyond to share research, discuss emerging issues in the field, and network with colleagues, ever since it was first started at UConn in 1987.
The 35th symposium will be hybrid, with in-person sessions held at Storrs (UConn campus) and all sessions broadcast live via Whova. Short courses will be offered on May 22 and May 23, and the main conference program will be on May 24 and May 25. Here are a few highlights.
- There will be 7 short courses taught by an all-star lineup that cover a spectrum of topics, including clinical trial designs with the use of RWD, statistical learning with neuroimaging data, programing with NIMBLE, applied event time data analysis, machine learning with large health data, and statistical topics on outcome research.
- There will be five plenary talks/panels. Two keynote presentations will be given by Dr. Jeff Leek (JHU) and Dr. Susan Murphy (Harvard). We are also excited to have a keynote panel session on Covid-19 vaccine development with panelists that are statistical leaders from major vaccine producers, government agencies, and academic institutions, including Dr. Peter Gilbert (Fred Hutchinson), Dr. Satrajit Roychoudhury (Pfizer), and Dr. Honghong Zhou (Moderna). A banquet talk will be given by Dr. Xiao-Li Meng (Harvard) and a Chernoff Lecture will be delivered by the 2022 recipient of the Chernoff Excellence in Statistics Award.
- Our program committee is joined by more than 40 members from various institutions and companies in the New England area and beyond, who are working diligently to create a high-quality scientific program.
- Students are encouraged to participate in our student research/poster competitions and a Statathon data challenge. For the first time, we also offer job placement services to students and sponsors.

Invited Sessions
We are calling for proposals for invited sessions. Please submit invited session proposal at Session Proposal Submission by March 28, 2022, and abstract at Abstract Submission by May 2, 2022.
Student Research Awards (Sponsored by MassMutual)
Students are encouraged to submit papers for consideration of NESS Student Research Awards, sponsored by MassMutual. More information can be found on the NESS Student Research Awards page. Application materials need to be emailed to symposium@nestat.org, copying xiaojing.wang@uconn.edu, with the title Paper Competition Submission, no later than May 9, 2022.
Student Poster Awards (Sponsored by Munich Re)
Students are encouraged to submit posters for consideration of NESS Student Poster Awards, sponsored by Munich Re. More information can be found on the NESS Student Poster Awards page. Application materials need to be emailed to symposium@nestat.org, copying yao.zheng@uconn.edu, with the title Poster Competition Submission, no later than May 9, 2022.
Note: Each student is allowed to submit a paper for consideration of the student research award and at the same time to submit a poster for consideration of the student poster award. However, the student will not be eligible for consideration of the student poster award if she/he is a winner of the student research awards.
Statathon
Statathon is a statistical data science invention marathon. Anyone who has an interest in data science can attend Statathon to approach a real-world data science problem, some of which are local, in new and innovative ways. It emphasizes the statistical aspects (insight, interpretation, significance, etc.) of data science problems that are often overlooked in many hackathons.
