Statistics at a Crossroads: Challenges and Opportunities in the Data Science Era

Funded by the National Science Foundation (DMS-1840278, University of Michigan), we are charged to ask the statistics community to create a report that highlights emerging opportunities for statistical research and the educational innovations required to seize those opportunities. As a first step, we are organizing an interactive online meeting, which will:
- Outline the process for collecting ideas and producing the report,
- Present examples of emerging opportunities in the big data era, and
- Invite participants to share ideas for future research investment in statistics.
The ideas submitted via the online meeting will inform the discussions at the subsequent 3-day workshop. The steering committee consists of the following members: James Berger (Duke University), Xuming He (University of Michigan), David Madigan (Columbia University), Susan Murphy (Harvard University), Bin Yu (University of California, Berkeley), and Jon Wellner (University of Washington).
