The Rochester Chapter of the ASA is pleased to inform you of our next monthly meeting on Monday, January 31, 2022. During this meeting, we will feature a 15-minute short talk by Dr. Bruce Blaine (Professor of Statistics, St. John Fisher College). We would like to invite all interested fellow statisticians and ASA members to attend this mini talk. There will be other agenda items discussed afterwards that may of most interest to the Rochester and geographically local chapters.

Mini-Talk Abstract:
RStudio Cloud vs. local-install R/RStudio for teaching intro level statistics: Some implications for teaching and learning
Introductory statistics courses with data analytic learning goals require the instructor to consider the wide range of computing options, and their implications for teaching and learning. This talk presents some points of contrast between RStudio Cloud and local-install R/RStudio for teaching and learning in the introductory course. The observations are based on my experience teaching an Intro to Data Science course over several years, using both cloud and local computing platforms, as well as teaching online. Although I don't intend to declare a "winner," RStudio Cloud presents an easier on-ramp for students with no computing experience, and is preferred for online teaching and remote learning.
