    Dear All,

Comments for this Census request in the Federal Register, "Soliciting Feedback From Users on 2020 Census Data Products," are due Tuesday, September 17.

Please consider taking a few moments to share "information on how products for prior decennial censuses were used to help determine which products to disseminate for the 2020 Census."

    Thank you,
    Steve

    Dear All,

Allow me to provide more information on this request and to let you know there is a wide push around the federal statistics community to respond to the call for feedback from Census data users. I should also clarify that you are being asked to provide comments using this Federal Register form (Click on "Submit a Formal Comment") and not ASA Connect.

The American Sociological Association provided this text to their members: "The Bureau of the Census needs feedback from individual researchers, research centers, businesses, state and local governments – or anyone who uses census data -- about the value of specific data products and their availability at specific levels of geography.  There is currently a request for comments in the Federal Register that will close in just a few days (on September 17).  Among other questions, the Bureau is asking how you would accomplish your work if specific Census products did not exist.  While it is possible to upload a comment in any form, the Bureau has provided a spreadsheet for giving your feedback in a form that will be particularly useful – go to the 3rd, 4th and 5th tabs on the spreadsheet and fill out the sections that apply to your work.  Save the file and then upload it to the Federal Register here.   If you'd like to get more information about submitting a comment, there is an informational webinar you can watch."

They also created this action alert for their members.

The Association of Public Data Users has also posted a call.

    Thank you,
    Steve

    Dear ASA Community,

The Census Bureau has reopened the call for comments soliciting feedback from stakeholders about the ways they use decennial census data products. Thank you if you have already provided comments. We ask all to help spread the word on the call for comments and to provide comments if you use decennial census data and haven't already commented. Please see the letter below.

    Thank you,
    Steve

Subject: Reopened: Census Bureau's Federal Register Notice Regarding 2020 Census Data Products

    Dear Census Bureau Stakeholder,

The Census Bureau has reopened the comment period for Soliciting Feedback from Users on 2020 Census Data Products that was published in the Federal Register on July 19, 2018 (Document Number 2015-15458).

The reopened notice, published with a 30-day comment period closes on November 8, 2018. All comments and information received during the prior comment period, as well as those received between September 17 and November 8 will be fully considered and do not need to be resubmitted.

We have reopened the comment period because stakeholder feedback is fundamental to our review of decennial census data products in preparation for the 2020 Census. As we prepare our 2020 data products, it is critical that we receive feedback from our stakeholders about the ways they use decennial census data products. Because of improved disclosure avoidance procedures that will be implemented for the 2020 Census, it is unlikely we will be able to produce the same amount of detailed data we have produced in past decennial census. The feedback you provide is essential as we plan our data products for the 2020 Census.

The Census Bureau requests feedback from users on specific decennial census products, such as Summary File 1, Summary File 2, and the Demographic Profile. We encourage users to review the original notice, which includes specific details about the feedback we are seeking and a link to an optional spreadsheet that will help users provide detailed feedback.

A recorded informational webinar is available to view to assist users with how to respond to the notice and use the optional spreadsheet.

We welcome written comments, which can be submitted via regulations.gov, emailed to POP.2020.DataProducts@census.gov, or mailed to Karen Battle, Chief, Population Division, U.S. Census Bureau 6H174, Washington, DC 20233. Comments must be received in writing by November 8, 2018.

Your feedback is critical to help us plan for 2020 Census Data Products. Please respond today and share this opportunity with others who may be interested.

    Thank you,

    Karen Battle

    Chief, Population Division

    U.S. Census Bureau
