    RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

    BIOSTATISTICIAN

     

    NATURE OF WORK:

     

    The Department of Biostatistics and Informatics (BIOS) at the Colorado School of Public (ColoradoSPH) Health has an opening for a full-time Research Associate / Biostatistician. While this position will be appointed in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics (BIOS) it will be primarily based at ACCORDS– the Adult and Child Consortium for Health Outcomes Research and Delivery Science – a program that is jointly funded by the School of Medicine and Children's Hospital Colorado to support the growth of outcomes and T3-T4 translational research. ACCORDS serves as a center for health care professionals, researchers and biostatisticians from across the University to pool skills and talents to pursue health outcomes research and education. In addition, ACCORDS fosters strong research and educational collaborations with external partners including Denver Health, Kaiser Permanente, the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment and other health care delivery systems and many community organizations. ACCORDS has programs in Dissemination and Implementation Science, Education, and Community Engagement and Outreach, as well as Methodological Cores in Qualitative Science, Practice-based Research Networks, Biostatistics for Health Services Research, Analytic Health Information Technology and mobile health.

     

    The Research Associate is a key research-faculty position in the Department. A Research Associate is expected to provide high-level, professional and scientifically rigorous biostatistics consulting and collaboration support to biomedical and health outcomes researchers at UCD. They are expected to become a significant contributor in their collaborations, partnering to define and shape the research direction of the team. A person in this position works with investigators on the design and analytical aspects of the research process, including: design of new studies, structuring data collection systems, the application of state-of-the-art statistical methodologies, analyses, and preparation of abstracts, oral and poster presentations, and scientific manuscripts. Depending on the particular collaborations interesting biostatistics research opportunities may arise; although it is not the emphasis of the position. 

     

    PROFESSIONAL FIELD:

     

    Public Health, Biostatistics, Biomedical Research, Data Analysis and Management.

     

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

     

    The Research Associate position will be supervised by the Director of the Biostatistics Core at ACCORDS. A Research Associate will work independently, in large part, and be linked with one or more large collaborative groups. The faculty of the Biostatistics Core at ACCORDS, Scientific Collaborators, Chair of Biostatistics and Informatics and other faculty in DBI are available for mentorship and guidance.

     

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

     

    This position can have supervisory responsibilities with research instructors, PRAs, or graduate research assistants.

     

    EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

     

    The Research Associate will work independently with investigators spanning the spectrum of biomedical, research outcomes, and public health research on an academic health sciences campus. This individual will provide the biostatistical expertise in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of biomedical investigators and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines. The Research Associate will be expected to develop leadership roles in their collaborations. However, there is no expectation regarding development of his/her own independent research methods work.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Strong knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in medical research.
    • Strong programming skills in a common statistical software package (such as SAS, R, S-Plus, and/or SPSS).
    • Good organizational skills across individual projects, managing own work load.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Positive attitude and the ability to work with outcomes research investigators and colleagues in ACCORDS, DBI and CSPH.
    • Ability to contribute to the growth and development of ACCORDS, BIOS, ColoradoSPH, and their collaborative partnerships.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills.

    Qualifications

     

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • The position requires formal training and experience in biostatistics. A doctoral-level degree (PhD, ScD, DrPH) in Biostatistics or a closely related area is required. At least 2 years of previous experience or training as a statistical consultant/collaborator is required

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Evidence of independent or collaborative research through publications.
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead the biostatistics elements of clinical or translational research projects.
    • Or Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
