CWS - Societal Impact Award

  • 1.  CWS - Societal Impact Award

    Posted 03-04-2021 16:13

The Caucus for Women in Statistics (CWS) is establishing the Societal Impact Award to recognize the impact that statisticians make to society at large. The award will be given annually to a statistician who has actively worked to advance social justice, or diversity, equity and inclusion through their research, teaching or service. The area of societal impact may include, but is not limited to: health; education; professional development; statistical literacy and dissemination in the media. The specific ways in which the impact can be made include, but are not limited to: research that has diversity, equity and inclusion as a theme; teaching or mentoring; outreach to promote statistics to diverse populations; service to the statistical profession that has diversity, equity and inclusion as a foci, or service to society at large that specifically involves using statistics to promote social justice (i.e., beyond volunteering time). By establishing this award, CWS seeks to promote the active involvement and impact of statisticians in society more broadly.

The recipient of the annual award will be an individual with a degree in statistics, biostatistics, data science or related fields, and a CWS member at the time of the nomination.

The recipient will receive a plaque during our annual reception held at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), and will be given the opportunity to organize an invited session at the Women In Statistics and Data Science conference.  The recipient's work will be widely publicized through our website, including, for example, a video clip.
