  • 1.  Book recommendation for Complex Survey - Design and Analysis

    Posted 10-20-2017 09:00
    Hello

I am seeking some suggestions about books on complex survey design and analysis. I have taken sample survey courses long time ago and would like to brush up my knowledge. The goal is to be able to design complex surveys for research purposes utilizing software for sample size calculation and subsequent analysis appropriate for the design.

In the past, I've read Cochran's Sampling Techniques as well as Sharon Lohr's book (2009)

I've done some research on new books and found the following two which I am considering to collect:

Applied Survey Data Analysis, Second Edition (June 2017)
by Steven G. Heeringa, Brady T. West, Patricia A. Berglund

Complex Survey Data Analysis with SAS (Sep, 2016)
    by Taylor H. Lewis

I have access to SAS and I am well versed with R. I've used Stata in the past but I do not use/have access anymore.

    I would appreciate your recommendations.

    Thanks

    Enayet

Giving it a nudge to see if I can get some feedback on sampling :)

    Hi Enayet,

you might want to take a look at Thomas Lumley's book 'Complex Surveys: A Guide to Analysis Using R', find the description here:

Wiley: Complex Surveys: A Guide to Analysis Using R - Thomas Lumley

Wiley: Complex Surveys: A Guide to Analysis Using R - Thomas Lumley
The book begins with coverage of basic tools and topics within survey analysis such as simple and stratified sampling, cluster sampling, linear regression, and categorical data regression. Subsequent chapters delve into more technical aspects of complex survey analysis, including post-stratification, two-phase sampling, missing data, and causal inference.

It's a nice book, and the examples are worked out using Lumley's 'survey' package in R. I think it would be excellent to brush up your knowledge.

    Enayet,

Search http://www.stat.columbia.edu/~gelman/research/published/ for "survey"; I find 16 hits.  There's at least one on http://www.stat.columbia.edu/~gelman/research/unpublished/ and one on http://mc-stan.org/users/documentation/case-studies.html.  There are also a number of postings on Andrew Gelman's blog: http://andrewgelman.com/?s=survey

I'm not experienced in survey analysis, but I wonder if any of those might help you.

I am not familiar with the Lewis SAS book but I know a lot about the SAS Education course,

Probability Surveys 1: Design, Descriptive Statistics, and Analysis.

    The course description follows:

This course focuses on designing business and household surveys and analyzing data collected under complex survey designs. The course addresses the SAS procedures POWER, SURVEYSELECT, SURVEYMEANS, SURVEYFREQ, SURVEYREG, SURVEYLOGISTIC, and SURVEYIMPUTE. In addition, the graphing procedures GPLOT, SGPLOT, and SGPANEL are also covered.

More details can be found at.
