    Hello,

Does anybody have a source for demographic data by ZIP code?  I have seen some on the Census website, but it's by tract.

    Sincerely,,
    Barry DeCicco

In addition to tracts, block groups, etc., the Census Bureau also produces some data by Zip Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA). These are groups of census blocks created by the Census Bureau designed to match zip codes as closely as possible. Not an exact match, but I have found it very use for matching Census data to other sources.

    Hi Barry,

I haven't tried this, but a google search led to this: https://verstaresearch.com/blog/merging-zip-codes-with-census-data/

For whatever reason the State of Missouri has some data available by Zip code:

The census tabulates by ZCTA, which is close but not *exactly* the same - see https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/guidance/geo-areas/zctas.html

You might be able to find a private vendor, but my experience is they tend to have less coverage geographically or over time.

You may find useful information regarding population by zip with demographics in the HCUP-US Methods Series at the following link:

If you are interested in income data as well, the IRS has income data and other tax statistics by zip code:

Once the ZCTA answer appeared, I decided to stay away from this question, but given some of the recent answers, it is time to weigh int.

First, zip codes were never intended to be geographic areas on a map, instead they were delineated to make it possible to deliver mail.  Because of this, they originally were simply a list of addresses.  I think GDT, Geographic Data Technologies was the first vendor to crease zip codes from the carrier data.  You must remember the followsing:

Aside from zip codes by area, one also has a variety of anomalies, these include:

Postal codes where one must pick up ones mail at the post box, and  rural delivery.

Sub-stations, where people rent boxes and pick up mail.

Point zips, some of these are postal stations, others are big apartment buildings, others are office buildings or complexes that get a lot of mail.

What one wants is to have a reasonable proxy of who lives in a zip code.

With the old GDT data, one would include the enclosed zips (either points or areas) that lay within other zips, as part of the larger zip.

The ZCTA concenpt that the Census is now using is pretty close to this.

The census itself uses zip codes (actual for its business census file), and zcta for population.
