  • 1.  Statisticians Confront Racial Profiling – Help Wanted

    Posted 11-08-2021 07:05

There have been many prosecutions in Massachusetts in which racial profiling has been alleged.  The courts had been encouraging attempts to establish racial profiling but have been cautious about the statistical analysis supporting it.  However, the Long case (September 2020) was a breakthrough in establishing the use of statistics to prove racial profiling in Massachusetts.

Since the Long decision, lawyers in Massachusetts have an increased need for statisticians to assist in cases in which clients believe their stops were racially profiled.  I have been working on some of these cases, but have had to decline others.  Together, with Eileen Morrison, one of the attorneys involved, I will be giving a workshop to show lawyers the process of working with a statistician and to invite more statisticians into the discussion.

We will give a one-hour presentation, describing to lawyers how to work with a statistical expert and showing statisticians the analysis process in such cases.

The workshop will be Friday, December 10, 2021, 1:00 – 2:00 PM by Zoom.
