    Abstract:

A 2019 report to the National Science Foundation prepared by leading statisticians advocates that, to embrace and lead data science, the Statistics discipline "must evolve and grow to be the transdisciplinary science that collects and extracts useful information from data." It is widely accepted that data science has three pillars: statistics, computer science, and domain science. Statistical computing holds a unique position connecting two of them. While the statistics community redefines, broadens, and transforms the field of Statistics at a crossroads, what are the challenges to statistical computing as a subfield? What actions can the Section of Statistical Computing can take with our unique position? Thoughts on research outlets, educational curricular, better practice, cultural changes, and beyond will be discussed.
