  • 1.  Model for hospitals from data with patients within hospitals

    Posted 05-20-2021 11:41
    Dear ASA Community:

My dataset is structured with PatientID, HospitalID, patient variables such as (age, gender, race, disease variables),
hospital variables such as (urban/rural, for-profit/not-for-profit, etc.).

A researcher is interested in hospital-level predictors of the cost of a specific procedure.

Does anyone have suggestions for articles or resources that focus on analysis at the facility level, when the original dataset contains persons clustered within facilities?

    Dear Brandy,

In my experience, multilevel models are perfect for this. We recently published an example in education (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00224065.2020.1828008), for which we used materials such as the book Data Analysis Using Regression and Multilevel/Hierarchical Models by Gelman.

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Hi Brandy,

A couple years ago I was pointed towards a paper that did something similar:

Croon, Marcel a, and Marc J P M van Veldhoven. "Predicting Group-Level Outcome Variables from Variables Measured at the Individual Level: A Latent Variable Multilevel Model." Psychological Methods 12, no. 1 (2007): 45–57. https://doi.org/10.1037/1082-989X.12.1.45.

There is now an R package on CRAN called MicroMacroMultilevel.

    Hope that helps,
    Travis

    Brandy,

Would Stan (https://mc-stan.org/) help you?  R's brms package interface to Stan (https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/brms/index.html)  might make it easier.
