    Position Summary

    University of Denver welcomes applications for the Faculty Director in its Computer Science Professional Programs, which currently include on-campus MS degrees in Data Science and Cyber Scurity. In addition, DataScience@Denver is a burgeoning online program, recently launched in collaboration with 2U, aimed at a fast-growing student population and global visibility. 

     

    The Faculty Director reports to the Chair of the Computer Science Department with dotted-line reporting to the Senior Associate Dean and works in collaboration with the Ritchie School Executive Director of Professional Degree Programs to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of University of Denver's teaching development and learning programs.

     

    This Faculty Director will be a 12-month position based on a 9-month, non-tenure-track faculty position and a 3-month administrative position related to these programs (rank commensurate with educational background and professional work-experience). The Faculty Director will continually assess needs and appropriately initiate, maintain, or expand relevant, general and discipline-specific resources on teaching and learning. This person contributes to a broad range of teaching and learning efforts, with specific management responsibility for selected programs and projects. Partnerships will be with departments, programs and schools. This position is a full-time position. 

     

    The position is available immediately. The compensation for this position is competitive and commensurate with educational background and experience.  

     

    Essential Functions

             Acts as liaison between course leads, course coordinators, and adjuncts.

             Oversees faculty operations: HR process, technology, course schedules, logistics.

             Assumes primary vision, program management, and oversight responsibility for these programs as well as for faculty involved in these programs. Assists Ritchie School Executive Director of Professional Degree Programs and Assistant Dean for Business and Operations in budget development and management.

             Facilitates communication and meetings between faculty.

             Coordinates course revisions and curriculum builds.

             Develop, implement and evaluate educational offerings and create and/or disseminate materials in collaboration with colleagues across the Ritchie School that are specialized to the disciplinary needs of instructors, TAs, and students.

             Recruits and manages adjunct hiring; works between course leads and 2U Faculty Recruitment & Development team.

             Manages relations between RSECS, faculty, and 2U.

             Facilitates onboarding, training and development.

             Monitors performance and reaches out to address issues. Manages escalations together with the Computer Science Chair and the Dean's Office.

             Participate in long-term planning, working with the Computer Science Chair, the Ritchie School Executive Director of Professional Degree Programs, and the Dean's office to design and implement unified programs/services that expand the University of Denver's impact and ensure effective faculty engagement with research-based teaching and learning practices.

             Collaborate with University of Denver colleagues and departments to ensure that the experiences of students inform course design and pedagogical decisions.

             Offer one-on-one instructional support to instructors such as conduct mid-quarter and other formative assessments of teaching, and class room observations, and teaching with technology.

             May have minimal teaching responsibilities assigned, in line with expertise.

     

    Qualifications

    Appointment rank will be commensurate with the background and experience of applicants.

     

    Teaching Professorial Series

             Teaching Assistant Professors will be candidates in the first two to seven years of experience post-doctorate with strong, documented potential for excellence in teaching. Appointments at this rank will be made initially as a one-year contract renewable on a yearly basis for three years, followed by a three-year contract where renewal is contingent on formal performance review.

             Teaching Associate Professors will be candidates who are mid-career teacher/scholars with a strong, documented excellence in teaching. If the chosen candidate is deemed to have background and experience commensurate with this rank, a contract length of up to 5 years could be extended.

             Teaching Professors will be candidates at the top of their career as teacher/scholars with an extensive, strong, documented excellence in teaching. Often candidates will have received awards for their teaching and have evidence of functioning as a mentor-teacher to other teaching faculty. If the chosen candidate is deemed to have background and experience commensurate with this rank, a contract length of up to 7 years could be extended.

     

    Required Qualifications

             Advanced degree (Ph.D.) computer science or in a relevant field.

             Academic leadership experience in a university setting.

             Administrative experience in a university setting. 

             Ability to effectively present information to faculty, academic and campus leaders, corporate leaders, and public groups.

             The ability to be self-directed with broadly-defined limits on assignments.

             Excellent oral and written communication skills.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

             Teaching experience in a college or university setting, with a superior academic performance record.

             Experience with teaching with technology highly desired

             Experience in faculty and graduate student teaching development highly desired.

             Experience in program management, especially complex projects with multiple deadlines highly desired.

             Experience in student advising, mentoring, or academic coaching highly desired.

     

    Professor of the Practice Series in Computer Science Professional Education

             Assistant Professor of the Practice in Computer Science Professional Education will be candidates with a minimum of 10 years of appropriate industry experience or its functional equivalent. This experience should be of the nature to provide the candidate with the desired knowledge and skills to serve as Assistant Professor of the Practice. Appointments at this rank will be made initially as a one-year contract renewable on a yearly basis for three years, followed by a three-year contract where renewal is contingent on formal performance review.

             Associate Professor of the Practice in Computer Science Professional Education will be candidates with a minimum of 15 years of appropriate industry experience or its functional equivalent. This experience should be of the nature to provide the candidate with the desired knowledge and skills to serve as Associate Professor of the Practice. This academic level requires deeper and broader knowledge of practice than does the Assistant Professor level. If the chosen candidate is deemed to have background and experience commensurate with this rank, a contract length of up to 5 years could be extended.

             Professor of the Practice in Computer Science Professional Education will be candidates with a minimum of 20 years of appropriate industry experience or its functional equivalent is preferred. This experience should be of the nature to provide the candidate with the desired knowledge and skills to serve as Professor of the Practice. This academic level requires deeper and broader knowledge of practice than does the Associate Professor level. If the chosen candidate is deemed to have background and experience commensurate with this rank, a contract length of up to 7 years could be extended.

     

    Required Qualifications

             MS in Computer Science or related discipline by the time of appointment start date.

             Academic leadership experience in a university setting.

             Administrative experience in a university setting. 

             Ability to effectively present information to faculty, academic and campus leaders, corporate leaders, and public groups.

             The ability to be self-directed with broadly-defined limits on assignments.

             Excellent oral and written communication skills.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

             Advanced degree (Ph.D.) computer science or in a relevant field.
