I have posted this message to the COVID-19 data and research discussion group:
"CDC/NVSS has responded to calls for data on excess deaths during the COVID-19 crisis by providing visualizations of excess data nationally and by state:
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm . These graphic presentations of the time series of deaths from all causes by week show, for example, the rapid increase in excess deaths in the state of Mississippi that has led the governor to restore social isolation restrictions. Kudos to the CDC/NVSS staff who have accelerated releases of these data. The CDC/NVSS has also released data by state for 2019 and though 4/2020."
Apologies for multiple posting. I have done so in response to claims that the rate of excess deaths have fallen during the last week or two. The CDC/NVSS visualizations and data reflect lags in reporting deaths that make the recent weeks numbers appear to have decreased. The data series clearly show the expected numbers of cases increasing for the same week as data become more complete. The tendency of some commentators to seize on any reports favorable to their pet causes should be a concern for ASA members.
