PUBLIC BRIEFING WEBINAR ON 7/20 AT 2PM ET

Forecasting Costs for Biomedical Data Preservation

Preserving and promoting access to data from biomedical research accelerates scientific discovery and improves health outcomes.  In order to plan for the disposition of these increasingly complex data sets, researchers and data archivists need to be able to accurately budget for the costs associated with long-term data curation.

Our recent report, Life Cycle Decisions for Biomedical Data: The Challenge of Forecasting Costs, examines approaches for forecasting costs for preserving, archiving, and promoting access to biomedical research data. This report provides a comprehensive conceptual framework for cost-effective decision making that encourages data accessibility and reuse for researchers, data managers, data scientists, and institutions that support platforms that enable biomedical research data preservation, discoverability, and use.

Learn more about the report by joining us for a public briefing webinar on July 20, 2020 from 2-3pm ET. During the webinar, members of the committee will discuss the key findings and conceptual framework presented in the report, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

    IDEA COMPETITION
Help Shape the Vision and Priorities for Future STEM Education

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is holding an idea competition to generate contributions to the Symposium on Imagining the Future of Undergraduate STEM Education, which will take place in a virtual format on November 12-13, 2020.  Winning submissions will be highlighted at the symposium and featured on the National Academies website. Winners will also be eligible for stipends to attend the symposium.

To enter, submit a statement or video addressing some aspect of the symposium's focus: What should undergraduate STEM education look like in 2040 and beyond to meet the needs of students, science, and society? What should we do now to prepare?

The deadline for the competition is July 15, 2020.  Learn more and submit your ideas on the symposium website.

About Math and Statistics at the National Academies

The Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics (BMSA) leads activities in the mathematical sciences at the National Academies in topic areas including from applied mathematics, scientific computing, and risk analysis.

The Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics (CATS) organizes studies and events focusing on the statistical sciences, big data and data science, statistical education, the use of statistics, and issues affecting the field. CATS occupies a pivotal position in the statistical community, providing expertise in methodology and policy formation.
