  • 1.  The Real-time Crime Forecasting Challenge

    Posted 11-14-2016 10:58

The National Institute of Justice has issued a data challenge called The Real-time Crime Forecasting Challenge, and I thought it might interest members of the ASA. The Challenge seeks to harness the advances in data science to address the challenges of crime and justice. It encourages data scientists across all scientific disciplines to foster innovation in forecasting methods. The goal is to develop algorithms that advance place-based crime forecasting through the use of data from one police jurisdiction (Portland (OR) Police Bureau). The link to their challenge page is http://www.nij.gov/funding/Pages/fy16-crime-forecasting-challenge.aspx . They have a total of $1.2M in prize money! It is also a very nice dataset. It will end up being a total of 5.25 years of all calls-for-service data at the address level with a few call types omitted.

Would-be participants should first read "To predict and serve?" by Lum and Isaac in the Oct '16 issue of Significance, so as not to become "part of the problem."
