It would be hard to find a more serious and current (consider precision medicine) set of applications than those in Steyerberg. The book spans all the major ideas, and is thoroughly referenced for deeper reading.

There are many online resources. But I always prefer "books" that I can touch--so I bought it :)
I've read and recommend this book.
Applied Predictive Modeling by Max Kuhn and Kjell Johnson

    Hello, Tasneem,

ASA member Liangyuan Hu shared an answer to your question via Twitter. She recommended Kuhn, M and Johnson, K (2013), Applied Predictive Modeling, as well.

Introduction to Statistical Learning by James, Witten, Hastie, and Tibsharani is a great book.
