  • 1.  2017 Section on Risk Analysis Student Paper and Poster Competitions

    Posted 10-20-2016 14:46

The Section on Risk Analysis of the American Statistical Association is soliciting entries for a student paper competition for the 2017 Joint Statistical Meetings. Each year the section offers at least one student a travel award to defray costs for attendance and presentation of their work at the Joint Statistical Meetings. The travel awards are $1000 for the best paper and $750 for the second best paper. This competition is open to all graduate and undergraduate students, full or part-time, attending an accredited academic program. The student must be a member of the Section on Risk Analysis or should join the section at the time of the paper submission. The contribution may be a theoretical development or it may cover any of the numerous applications of risk analysis, including environmental risk, financial risk, risk to engineering structures, health risks, risks to defense and national security, etc. Papers that have been accepted for publication are not eligible for the competition. Winners must present their work in a JSM session sponsored by the Section on Risk Analysis.

    Entrants should submit the following:

    1. A list of authors and contact information (the student must be the first author).
    2. A double-spaced manuscript in two versions: a regular manuscript with author information and a blinded manuscript without author information or other identifying information (such as references). Both versions should include an abstract. We further require that the manuscript be no more than 20 pages double spaced (excluding tables, figures, and references) in 12 point font.
    3. A reference letter from a faculty member familiar with the submitted work, stating the student status of the applicant and the publication status of the manuscript.

Entries should be sent to Michael Pennell, Chair of the Student Paper Award Committee, via email at pennell.28@osu.edu. The email should include the two versions of the completed manuscript as attachments in PDF format. All entries must arrive by 5 pm EST on December 16, 2016. Please include the words "Student Paper Award" in the subject line of the email. Manuscripts will be judged based on relevance and interest of the subject matter, the quality of writing, and of course the quality of the research itself. The result will be announced by January 16 and the winners will be required to submit their abstract to JSM by 11:59 pm, February 1, 2017.

Students who are not selected for a Student Paper Award may participate in the Best Poster Competition by submitting a poster at the JSM for the Section on Risk Analysis. The award for the Best Poster Competition is $500. The best poster is selected at the JSM.
