With the long weekend, it was a bit quiet here on ASA Connect last week. I hope you all enjoyed the day(s) off, if you had them! (I spent some quality time with family and pets.)

Don't forget about This Is Statistics' upcoming Sport Statistics Webinar, on 9/14. If you have students interested in sports stats, this is a great event for them!

Steve Pierson shared other news of note, including:
    - the NIH BD2K Guide to the Fundamentals of Data Science weekly webinar-based lecture series, starting this Friday
    - the NSF's request for feedback on its Strategic Plan
    - the search for a new U.S. Chief Statistician

Science Policy Fellow Amy Nussbaum also shared some news about the release of a new open data set from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

You started four new conversations last week
Joseph Locascio got the ball rolling on a discussion of Excel. So if you have strong (or even not so strong) feelings about the program, this is a conversation for you! Twenty-one replies so far.

Raid Amin asked you for your recs for an undergrad-level text on regression analysis. Eight ASA members have replied!

Michael Friendly is seeking early examples of animated statistical graphics. Eight replies so far here, as well!

Jean Adams is looking for help for a colleague who needs a good metagenomics stats books. No recommendations yet, so if you have one, it's needed!

Two conversations from the past week are still going!
The statistics-related popular book rec thread continued!

As did the conversation on calculators and calculator apps.
