Finding mentors and mentees?

  • 1.  Finding mentors and mentees?

Mentors play a vital role in championing the work and developing the careers of statisticians. A good mentor (or mentors!) can make all the difference in someone's professional life, but finding a mentor, never mind one that's a perfect match for a particular mentee, can be a challenge.

The ASA and its chapters and sections are at work to encourage mentoring and make finding a match easier. We introduced the ASA Mentoring Award <http://www.amstat.org/awards/mentoringaward.cfm> this year, and discussions of sections' mentoring programs planned for JSM 2016 have been popping up on section discussion boards recently. (Check out this month's Amstat News article looking back at a JSM 2015 mentoring workshop <http://magazine.amstat.org/blog/2016/07/01/jsmmentoring16/>, too!)

What advice would you share with a colleague who was seeking a mentor, or what was the biggest challenge you encountered in your search for a mentor?
